I am an Associate Professor of Journalism, focusing on climate journalism and emerging media at DePaul University in Chicago. I research climate change communication, climate journalism and extreme weather, as well as how climate change is talked about on social media and visualized by genAI chatbots.

I teach undergraduate and graduate classes in climate change communication and climate journalism, and social media journalism and introduction to mass communication. I am a DePaul Humanities Center Faculty Fellow.

I started my career as a community radio news director at WORT-FM in Madison, Wis. and went on to work in both print and digital platforms.

I completed my doctoral studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Department of Life Sciences Communication. While in graduate school I worked as a consultant in the UW-Madison DesignLab, a digital media lab and design consultancy service with the mission of improving students' digital communication skills.

I am a thought leader on the future of climate journalism and a contributor to Nieman Reports, a journalism industry publication from the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University. Additional bylines in: The Conversation U.S., In These Times magazine, Ms. Magazine, and Yale Climate Connections. My writing has been republished in GreenBiz, the International Business Times, Nieman Lab and Salon, along with numerous local publications around the country including the Chicago Sun-Times.

I publish peer-reviewed scholarship in leading science communication and social media journals, including: Public Understanding of Science, Environmental Communication, Social Media + Society and Convergence: The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies. I am a founding member of the International Environmental Communication Association and regularly presents research at national and international conferences. My latest peer-reviewed scholarship can be accessed via Google Scholar. I serve on the editorial board of a top-tier journal in the field, Environmental Communication.

I am a member of the Society of Environmental Journalists’ (SEJ) board of directors, serving as the elected representative for academic membership.
